“About 3 million tons of plastic bags are produced annually in Iran. Of this 3 million, not even one percent is recycled.” (Part of the exhibition statement)

We do not think of the size of 3 million tons (3,000,000,000 kg), as if we are shrinking large numbers to make the catastrophe smaller.

To visualize this large number objectively, I decided to build a device with two bobbins. The bobbins are rotated by a motor. They become full and empty. While maintaining their advertising use, the plastic bags between the bobbins move from one side to the other and show the social class of the people who participated in this call and donated their shopping bags to this project. The bobbins move, and this movement shows the infinite cycle of production and consumption. To calculate the area of plastic required to fill the bobbins of this device, a cuboid box with dimensions of 12 x 12 cm and a height of 1 m was made and filled with crushed plastics. The final weight of this box is 5 kg and equal to 500 meters of plastic tape with a width of 12 cm.

So in order to put 3 billion kilograms of plastic in such boxes, we will need 600 million boxes as below:

 3,000,000,000 ÷ 5 = 600,000,000

Given that each box weighs 5 kg, equivalent to 500 meters of plastic tape, in 600 million boxes, 3 billion meters of plastic tape with a width of 12 cm will be placed:

600,000,000 × 500 = 300,000,000,000

In this work, approximately 1000 meters of plastic are used. Wrapping this 1000 meters of plastic around one of the two bobbins, was formed a circle with a diameter of 50 cm. As a result, according to calculations, by gathering 300 billion meters of plastic tape around a hypothetical bobbin, a circle with a diameter of approximately 7500 meters will be formed.

With a total height of 828 meters and 163 floors, Burj Khalifa is the tallest human-made structure. So the bobbin with 3 million tons of plastic around it is nine times taller than this building and equal to a building with 1467 floors. This work is made on a scale of fifteen thousandths. Each meter of plastic in it is equivalent to 300 million meters of plastic weighing 3 million kilograms in actual dimensions. To visualize 3 billion kilograms of plastic in this dimension at 5-meter intervals, and with a fixed incremental pattern of 15 million, numbered labels showing the production of plastic bags in kilograms are affixed to the plastics.
